Vintage Godey Prints Plate with Victorian Ladies in Pink and Blue Dresses Salem China Co.

Here's your trivia question for today! What was the very first periodical published in the United States specifically for the ladies of the time?

Answer: Godey's Lady's Book! Published by Louis Antoine Godey (1804 - 1878), the monthly pioneered a format that is still used to this very day in magazines devoted to women's issues!

This plate is not from the Victorian era in which the design was created and published, but in the 1950s, dinnerware and collectible plates featuring Godey prints became very popular. This is one of those decorative plates, which may have been displayed in a charming wooden plate frame at that time.

As you can see in the photos, the design on this plate features two lovely Victorian ladies dressed in beautiful gowns, one in pink and mint green, the other in white (or perhaps pale gray) with a charming blue jacket. The ladies appear to be enjoying a brief respite during a walk in the park.

The plate measures 9-1/4" in diameter with a pretty ribbed edge design that sits outside of three concentric circles impress in the china. The plate is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. In strong light you can detect the beginnings of the crazing that is common in vintage glazed pieces. As you can see in the photos, the is a slender scratch over the head of the lady in pink.

The back of the plate bears an ink mark under the glaze that reads:

Godey Prints
By
Salem
China Co.
Made in U.S.A.

There is a capital letter 'W' to the left of the outlined rectangle that contains the Salem China Co. words.

Godey Prints are so distinctive, and this pretty collector's plate carries on that tradition!
